Just the other day I had an idea for a project I would like to realize. It would rely completly on user generated content. Which can be a blessing or disaster. So i Googled on User Generated content (UGC) and found this blog post on how wrong UGC can be, done wrong.
My idea was not initially to profit from the result, but rather to try something new and see what people thought of it. Many companies how ever appears to believe maybe a bit to high of the outcome of user generated investments. Presumably of the lack of knowledge and understanding of the dynamic of UGC. You can’t create a service built around UGC and expect users and costumers to do the job for you. Incitement is a strong motivation for people, and the lack of a clear return on investment isn’t helping ether. One can’t force users and costumers to contribute, there have to be something in for them.
I think the best user generated content emerge then there wasn’t an intention for it. It just arise when people had an interest in something and wanted to contribute, freely. A feeling of fellowship, contributory and time & energy investment. The same way you can’t force creativity, you have to give something in return if you exepct people to dedicate their time and energy to do your work for you, for free.
